Happy Channukah, Carmel School, From Israel!
December 2009
Every year, WIZO makes beautiful Rosh Hashana cards for children in Israel with the help of
the primary school students at Carmel School.
Last week, the Carmel School children were excited to receive gorgeous Channukah cards from a
school in Ness-Ziona, Israel.
Anne Topelberg, WIZO WA State President, presented the cards to some of the classes at the
school. The cards will be displayed in the foyer for all students to see.

Hannah Nelson donated a significant portion of her Bat Mitzvah money to
support WIZO's projects in Israel.
WIZO Western Australia President, Anne Topelberg, presented Hannah with a "Todah" certificate
in appreciation of her generosity.

WIZO Aviva Supports Ovarian Cancer Research
19th October 2009
WIZO Aviva held a fantastic meeting at the home of Di Adonis with over 20 women "frocking up"
for "Frocktober" in support of ovarian cancer research.
Karen Margolius spoke about ovarian and breast cancer and described the tests women should
ask for when they visit the doctor. Her talk, as usual, was both interesting and informative.

WIZO Tova Bakes Up a Challah Storm!
23rd August 2009
Bread, fresh from the oven, filled the home of Jessica Karotkin with a tantalizing
aroma as around 50 women (and one man!) drank in a demonstration bread-baking in a
uniquely Jewish way.
Sweet challah plaited in a three strand pattern appealed to those novel challah makers,
whilst the six strand plait served to challenge some! The result was an amazing plump,
glistening loaf beckoning to be eaten. If the plaiting techniques weren't enough,
Jessica impressed by demonstrating loaves filled with crushed nuts and chocolate!
A basket-weave pattern was demonstrated by Rachael Karotkin (left) - our youngest WIZO
member. The result was a wonderful challah perfect for Rosh Hashanah!
A tray of beautifully presented mini-challot served on a stick and wrapped in cellophane
and blue ribbon were a popular take home reminder of an afternoon to remember.

A happy crowd enjoyed a delicious champagne high tea at the Perth Jewish Centre where,
from the moment you walked through the "chuppah" at the entrance, you were transported to a
reception room of a by-gone era.
