Celebrity Parachute Debate Brunch 21st February 2010
WIZO South Australia, Jewish Community Services and the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce
(SA) combined to organise a most successful Celebrity Parachute Debate Brunch attended by 180
people at The Observatory Function Centre.
Celebrity speakers (pictured above) were David Lloyd (Funeral Director), Alexander Downer (UN Special Envoy
for Cyprus), Alexander Ward (President-Elect, Law Council of Australia) and Jean Kittson
(comedian, performer and writer). They four provided wonderful entertainment while
separately arguing why they, alone, should receive the only parachute on the plummeting Airbus
A380 from Adelaide to Tel Aviv.
Miriam Millingen chaired the organizing committee and Rob Nachum fulfilled the
role of a very able and amusing MC. David Lloyd told us a series of very amusing and
topical jokes and argued that he, as an undertaker, should receive the parachute so that, after
the plane had crashed, he would be alive to appropriately bury the others. Alexander Downer
held the floor with his extraordinarily witty and persuasive speech and Alexander Ward
provided remarkable and very funny theories as to why he should get the parachute. But Jean
Kittson brought the house down with her lampooning of the other speakers and her hilarious
discourse on why she should be the chosen one - telling us if she didn't get the parachute, we
would have to break the news to her children!
Event Sponsors were Neale Realty, Blackwell Funerals and ANZ Trustees, Swisse Vitamins,
Hayes Knight and Spotlight.

WIZO Members and our friends will be able to buy a paver on the path which leads to WIZO
Australia’s "House of Dreams" at WIZO Ahuzat Yeladim in Haifa.
The first paver will be in the name of Miriam Millingen from funds raised for WIZO,
in lieu of gifts, at her 60th birthday.
A Visit WIZO Australia's Ahuzat Yeladim
- by Jill and Ron Peisach January 2009
A highlight of our trip to Israel was a visit, organised by Miriam Millingen, to Ahuzat
Yeladim, WIZO Australia’s flag project in Israel. To the children here, often from violent
and dysfunctional home environments, Ahuzat Yeladim offers a home, an education, counseling,
and therapy for troubled young minds.
The generosity of WIZO Australia supporters, has made possible the redevelopment of the campus.
Roofing the basketball court (pictured left) has made it accessible year-round, and refurbishing the aging
dormitories is but a first step in the overall redevelopment. We were shown the plans for
the "House of Dreams", a multi-purpose building, funding for which has been secured and
construction will finish in the near future.
The Director, Yossi Saragossi, is an extraordinary person. (That's me in the picture with Yossi)
Modest to a fault, he has
devoted 20 of his 50 years to the care of these young adults and is clearly loved and
respected by them. For an hour, he kept us rivetted with heart-rending case histories -
together with stories of extraordinary successes.
His sense of pride and fulfillment was evident in his description of the forthcoming
Graduation Day, when many of the residents would recommence their lives in the outside
world.
Our visit to this very special place was truly memorable. Ahuzat Yeladih has, for almost
70 years, achieved great things for many Israeli youth. WIZO’s involvement is one of which
we can be truly proud.

"IN HINESIGHT"
by the late
Hilde Hines
In this book, a remarkable Australian migrant
tells an extraordinary tale. Hilde Hines, who
sadly passed away in her 90th year, recalls her
life journey, from the innocence of her childhood
in Nuremberg, Germany, through the changes that
the Nazi regime forced upon her world, simply
because of her family's Jewish faith.
Fortune smiled on Hilde and, with her husband
Gus and his mother, she escaped Europe as war
was raging. While Hilde
and Gus were struggling
to start their lives anew
in Adelaide, Hilde's mother
and her sister spent the war
years amidst the bombs in London. Correspondence between
Adelaide and London provides a unique insight
into their respective situations.
Gus and Hilde's tireless efforts and determination
to succeed enabled them
to re-establish themselves
in this strange and foreign land. Hilde documents
their achievements: starting a family, building
a successful business and becoming active community members.
