YOU'VE GOT A FRIEND
WIZO Pet Therapy Program
Helping to heal

Helping children overcome trauma with
the help of a pet friend

At Ahuzat Yeladim, the Pet Therapy Program provides the "friendship" which enables the children to:
  • Develop interpersonal skills by learning to play with the animals and to care for them
  • Learn to take responsibility for their actions by taking care of the animals at the petting zoo
  • Go through a self-healing process by by helping many of the animals that have also been abused
  • Take on responsibility forone of the animals - a hamster, parrot, rabbit or dog - by adopting it.

The results of the program are amazing!

    CASE STUDY #1
A young boy was injured in a terrorist attack in 2003. From his hospital bed, he asked for his adopted parrot to be brought to his side. The hospital agreed. The pet played an enormous role in the boy's recovery.

To this day, the boy and his parrot are still together.

    CASE STUDY #2
A young boy adopted an abused and neglected dog that came to the school. He cared so much for the dog that he nurtured him back to health. Through this process, the boy's Counsellors noted a mutual improvement in the boy's social and emotional behavious and the dog's condition.

This "friendship" is the essence of the program which has evidenced the therapeutic value, healing process and recovery of both many children and their pet animals.

Some of the children have developed such a strong bond with their pets that they have virtually become inseparable.

An animal therapist specialist is emplyed at Ahuzat Yeladim 20 hours per week.

The demand for this program far outweighs the current capacity of the therapy facility.

Funding of this program is ongoing for every school year!

Please donate to the "You've Got a Friend" Pet Therapy Program to give the children at Ahuzat Yeladim a chance for a happy, healthy and normal life.
